Does a teacher need a degree to teach English overseas or is a TEFL certification good enough?

I agree with Rokaya. My opinion is that it is not needed, especially to teach children. But officially:
The short answer to this question is "yes" because most countries require a degree as a minimum requirement to obtain legal working status in their country. In addition, there are some institutes that will not accept any teacher that doesn't have a university degree.
That being said, there are positions available in China that don't require a degree (though this is changing rapidly). In addition, some government schools (only) in rural locations of Thailand can hire a non-degreed teacher provided that they get written authorization from the Ministry of Education stating that there are no qualified applicants available for such a rural posting. This is rare but it can happen with the school willing to go through the process (which most are not).

i guess TEFL certification might be enough as a certificate. however, a good teacher should work hard to determine the apropriate strategy with her sts. i had this certificate in addition to a lisence in english literature. nevertheless. TEFL certificate is the most helpful one in my career as a teacher.
